Madison Ferrel - Art Feature

This is Madison Ferrel. She is going into her senior year at CHS and is an award-winning artist! She shared with us her artwork and how she developed a passion for creating!

🎨How long have you been in art?

I’ve been in the art classes in CHS the entirety of my high school career, but I’ve been *into* art basically my entire life.

🎨What have you learned about yourself through your art?

My art helps me find different ways to express what I find aesthetically beautiful, helping me reign in a better sense of self.

🎨Is there a piece that is most meaningful to you?

While most of my pieces are just things I find pretty and thus want to draw, one of the only ones I find myself finding meaning in is the piece I made for my mother for mothers Day. It doesn’t have a title, but it is included within the pictures, the one with the mother and the two children (me and my family!)

🎨What is your inspiration for your artwork/style? Where do you gather inspiration?

My style of realism comes from years of learning to smudge graphite onto paper and honestly just hating how messy it was! I decided to dedicate myself to learning how to shade smoothly without having to make a mess.

🎨What is your favorite art style?

My favorite art style is - though I use my realistic one for most of my school business - the cartoonish one I have curated over the years. It has taken me a long time to understand how to translate realism into a more simplistic style, and I quite like where the results are currently.

🎨What did it mean to you to have multiple pieces of art in the show? And to also win ribbons?

To have multiple pieces in the show was honestly nerve-wracking. For the Art Show, my self-portrait was quite literally right in front of the door… so that was a little awkward. Other than that seeing people enjoy my art (and getting a ribbon for it) made it an amazing experience.

🎨How do you feel that your art teachers have helped/supported you in your pursuits?

My art teachers have helped me in the most simple way; making me draw! I honestly do not draw that often, and having an assignment forces me to do it.

🎨What artistic journey brought you into art, or how did you find your passion?

As a child, my passion for animated shows drew me towards pursuing art more heavily!

🎨When did you first discover your interest in art?

I first discovered my interest in art as a young kid. My brother was somewhat of a young Picasso, and I - even as a little baby - was driven by the spite to be better than him (lol).

🎨What have you learned about yourself through this experience/art?

After taking the classes I took this year (Studio Art and AP Studio Art), I have learned to be more confident in my abilities, as I always have a tendency to doubt my artistic talent.

🎨How did it feel getting to see people admire your work/talent?

It honestly makes me extremely nervous about sharing my art with others, but when I am commended for it (i.e., grades, compliments), it makes it a little easier.
